m nördlichen Teil des Naturparks Teutoburger Wald liegt das Kalletal im Kreis Lippe . In the northern part of the Teutoburg Forest Nature Park lies the Kalletal in the district of Lippe . Here the Weser flows through green floodplains. If you are looking for excursion tips in the Teutoburg Forest and would like to spend time in nature, we recommend the municipality Kalletal. Here you can actively engage in nature, for example by cycling along the River Weser, paddling around on the Weser by canoe or hiking along the River Weser through river meadows with lakes and forests, just as I did.

Weser Renaissance Castle Varenholz in the Kalletal
My starting point is the castle Varenholz with its beautiful facades in the style of the Weser Renaissance. The Weser Renaissance style was created in the 16th century along the river Weser - Varenholz Castle is one of its typical architectural examples. In the years 1945 to 1949, the UFA film company was housed here, today there is a boarding school behind the castle walls. Legend has it that on clear full moon nights the "White Lady" moves through the castle walls. The Varenholz Castle also has a pretty park with views of the Weser Valley and the small romantic castle chapel .
With the ferryman over the Weser in the Kalletal
If you are cycling on the Weser Cycle Route, you will ride along the banks of the Weser. On the gravel pits are now beautiful lakes. Actually, the ferryman wanted to put me here with his ferry across the Weser, but the river has too little water. The ferry service had to be stopped. With "hol öwer", it was unfortunately nothing, instead, the ferryman explains to me, which fish swim here in the river. The historic high-wire ferry connects Kalletal-Varenholz with Porta-Westfalica Veltheim and actually runs on weekends and public holidays between April and October on a tightrope and without any engine over the Weser.
Hike along the Weser in the Kalletal
Hiking in the Kalletal along the Weser: on the horizon the Porta Westfalica
Continue on a 4 kilometer hike along the Weser from Varenholz to Erder through green valleys and forests. On the horizon you can see the famous Porta Westfalica . On the Weser paddling in a comfortable Sunday morning pace a few chattering canoeists in front of him. In gardens along the river, red juicy apples shine in the September morning light. Here at this idyllic place worth the next stop.
Stop in "the ferry"
Martin Gerke has fulfilled a lifelong dream here on the Weser and set up a fruit distillery in "Der Fähre". Here the teacher burns fruit brandies in his free time. The fruit he gets from farmers or acquaintances from the region. The result is high percentage. Of course, I get a taste, whether apple or raspberry brandy - Martin Gerke offers all fruit in liquid form. A Vesper with a view of the Weser I get here too. The fruit brandy tasting with Vespers can also be booked. Otherwise, if you pass by or hike, just take a look and try.

Stay overnight in Herford
I stayed in the next larger city, which has a train station: in Herford. There I spent 2 nights in the hotel Zum Fürstabtei. The 400-year-old half-timbered house is a listed building and was formerly a Fürstabei Fürst Abbess in Herford. These hang today as portraits in the breakfast room.
Stroll through Herford
Herford is a beautiful city and offers a good starting point for things to do in the Kalletal. Who strolls through Herford finds many beautiful buildings, especially the cathedral church, the neo-baroque town hall or the newly opened market hall with many shops that offer regional specialties. The famous Martha Herford Museum attracts many visitors and you can relax in the H2O Therme.
Have you ever been to Kalletal or Lippe? Do you know about the region and know which highlights are still here? Write it in the comments!
